Big Adele News

If you are a reader of the State Library of Victoria (Australia) blog - Read Alert - you might have seen that I've been announced as the new Program Coordinator at the library's Centre for Youth Literature.  Mind blown.   This is going to be a monumental life change on many fronts.  I've spent the past year teaching Japanese preschoolers English and in less than a month I will be moving to Melbourne.  I've been a teacher for the past eight years and now I won't be.  It's change - much welcomed, very exciting change.

I start in early January and am unbelievably excited to join a team of enthusiastic book lovers. CYL - "...promotes reading for pleasure for all young people and champions youth literature across the broader cultural spectrum. It is a national resource and network, with international connections in the field. It produces events for young readers, professional development programs, a website, blog and multimedia, and advises and consults on youth literature."

See why I am thrilled? I am excited to move to Melbourne.  I am excited to work with similarly minded people.  I am excited to have youth literature become part of my profession full time, instead of the occasional class and PSnark.  Change is an awesome thing.

What this means?
  • I am moving home within the next two weeks
  • Then I am moving to Melbourne (any advice is much welcomed)
  • PSnark has an indeterminate future. (I will be working with authors a lot and there are some obvious issues if I continue to review.)  I will keep you updated.

It'll be great to have you here in Batmania! I'll have to attend one of CYL's events sometime :-) (I've only been to one - Justine Larbalestier in February 2009, I think.)

A whopping big congrats to you, Adele!

This sounds like pretty much the perfect job for you. I'll definitely miss your honest, fun and completely gutsy critiques, though, if you're required to stop reviewing.

All the best, and I'll definitely have to visit you the next time I'm in Melbourne.

Congrats Adele - I can't think of a better person for the job! Japan's loss is definitely our gain.

As someone who only moved to Melbourne a few years ago, I can assure you that it's a fantastic city to live in - so much to do and so laid back at the same time. I think you're going to like it here :)

If you want any info about the city before you come, feel free to email me (aimee dot said at gmail dot com).

Yay and double yay!

Congratulations Adele, the State Library seems like a brilliant place to work, and the Centre for Youth Literature always come across as being run by a great bunch of people. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

As to Melbourne, I've lived here most of my life - you'll love it! It's impossible not to love! The weather at the moment is crazy (quite humid, with occasional thunderstorms), but by the time you move should be just warm. Or hot. Really, really hot. Make sure you have a fan, or air conditioning in your new place.

You will do great. PSnark can still continue Adele, I balance working at a lit agency and partnering with Hicklebee's.
