Snarktress' Bit Lit Scorecard

Since I got sick over the weekend and wasn’t able to read all that much, I have decided to compile my thoughts on Bit Lit. (For those of you unfamiliar with the term, check this interview. For those of you who are lazy - it’s a term for Vampire Literature.)

The Vampire Academy - Richelle Mead
+ Dmitri and Rose - holy moly hotness
+ Really intelligent take on the class structure within the vampire society
+ Dmitri - Rose is completely unworthy of the guy.
- Two dimensional characters - inconsistent actions

Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side - Beth Fantaskey
+ Interesting take on vampire royal succession, arranged marriages and adoption.
+ Jessica is an awesome, consistent, hilarious, strong protagonist with a wicked shin kick.
+ Humorous - look out for some tummy tickling letters home to the old country
- Not enough people have read it :(
- Sequel is not guaranteed (because of above point).

Evernight - Claudia Grey
+ An awesome twist for the canniest of readers
+ Interesting and unique take on vampire society apart for the “real” world.
+ Balthazar
- Romance is clichéd
- Shy heroin that’s in no way shy

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
+ Compelling story
+ Romantic epic
+ Superior love triangle
- Vampire rules are even more distant from those established by Bram Stoker than most YA.
- Renesmee
- Protagonist is boring

Marked - The Casts
- I was bored by this novel, didn’t finish it.
- Try hard teen speak

The Vampire Diaries - LJ Smith
+ Yet to read but description and wikpedia search have all made me more intrigued.
- CW series trailer looks lame
+ Despite lame CW trailer, I still want to read them

This scorecard is purely subjective and a result of boredom.

CW trailer looks hot because Ian, his hotness, is playing bad boy vamp. I haven't read any of this bit lit (and the only one I have on my shelf is Evernight).

LJ Smiths series was good and way ahead of it's time. Haven't read Jessica's guide yet, but will have to now you've told me about it.

love your post.
I blogged about this today, too: http://heyteenager.blogspot.com/2009/05/steph-bowe-staking-sparkly-vampires.html

LOL @ Renesmee. WORST NAME EVER. REALLY, Bella?

Also, I hate that people call it epic. Just because it is a series that spanned 4 books, though it could have been easily 2 at the most, it does not mean it qualifies as an "epic."

Lord of the Rings is epic.
Star Wars is epic.

Twilight, not so much.

Well, despite the fact that this post came out of boredom, I loved it! :)

I would say more, but yanno... gotta be careful what I say in public. LOL.

I agree with you about the House of Night series - the teen speak drives me crazy!

I want to read The Vampire Diaries too, because I think the show looks quite good (ahem).

I loved Jessica's Guide! If it wasn't for your review, I wouldn't have read it. You gave it a wonderful review. Unfortunately the name is a turn off, and maybe that's why so many pass it by.

I read the House of Night Series (Casts), I also couldn't stand the teen talk. The writing was terrible and the authors tried to hard! But the concept was enough to keep me reading and hoping the books would get better. They didn't. Now I'm in so deep with the story line, I'll probably finish the series.

L.J. Smith has another series, Night World. I might check it out. It looks more interesting than Vampire Diaries.

I SO want to read Jessica's Guide. I've been waiting patiently to support the local booksellers on this one, but they don't seem to want to give me what I want, so I'm speeding to Amazon to order.

After reading your review of it, I stomp my foot like a little kid every time I see it pop up somewhere, because I want it, so badly.
